About Poca Trails
Pocahontas Trails, the first IMBA Chapter in West Virginia, has been helping improve outdoor recreation in Pocahontas County for over a decade. Initially focused on trail maintenance, the organization has since expanded its efforts to promote local trails, host cross-country and enduro races, and increase both trail maintenance and construction initiatives.
As part of the Freehub West Virginia Photo Book promotion, Pocahontas Trails is working to fund the paving of the Linwood Pump Track. Built with community support, the pump track has become a well-used feature, and paving it will extend its usability, broaden its appeal, and enhance the overall riding experience.
The organization aims to raise $12,000, which, combined with matching contributions in funding, labor, and materials, will complete the project. Key supporters include Snowshoe Mountain, Insomniac Designs, Old Spruce Brewing, the Snowshoe Foundation, and the many volunteers who dedicate their time to strengthening the local outdoor community.
Welcome to Issue 16.1
Never in mountain biking’s history has West Virginia been a place for the faint of heart. The Mountain State’s undulating terrain can be punishing for the unprepared—it’s no coincidence that hardcore disciplines such as 24-hour racing came to prominence in Canaan. But a gnarly riding scene is nowhere close to the full story. Inclusive communities of riders who truly live to spend time in the woods have existed in West Virginia for decades. Now, longtime community trail advocates are teaming up with a new generation of mountain bikers to fuel a statewide singletrack resurgence that is catapulting the region out of old-school stereotypes and into a new era. This edition of Freehub is dedicated to documenting this renewed sense of progressive, signature West Virginia riding while showing off its sheer beauty through the eyes of some of the state’s best photographers.
