Pisgah Give Back Freehub X Pisgah Area SORBA
Words and Photos by Freehub Mountain Bike Magazine
It's been just over one year since Hurricane Helene slammed into North Carolina. Helene triggered over 2,000 landslides and damaged more than 600 roads, 800 bridges, and 70,000 homes. In its wake, the hurricane left 100 people dead. In that immediate aftermath, with limited communication and mobility, the community banded together to rebuild their lives, and then later, their trails.
As described in the Freehub magazine feature, “Higher Ground,” volunteers from Pisgah Area SORBA sprang into action in the wake of Hurricane Helene. These volunteers temporarily set aside their usual role of maintaining hundreds of miles of multi-use trails to help meet the urgent rescue needs of those affected by the hurricane and flooding. Pisgah Area SORBA rose to the challenge of serving both community and human needs. Now, they need our help to continue their mission of advancing trails in the Pisgah Ranger District for all mountain bikers.
Freehub Media is partnering with Specialized Bicycles, Fox Factory, Cane Creek, Better Bolts, Continental Tires, Ride Rock Creek, Industry Nine, and Fat Tire Brewing to host a virtual fundraiser to benefit the Pisgah Area SORBA. All funds will go directly to the Pisgah Area SORBA, a Western North Carolina chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, in its vital work to repair and maintain trails in western North Carolina. Fat Tire has donated a new Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper 15, customized with Fox suspension, Industry Nine wheels, and more. additionally, Fat Tire is matching raffle funds up to $10,000!

About Pisgah Area Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA)
Pisgah Area SORBA is dedicated to building and connecting the WNC community by improving mountain biking access and infrastructure while advancing trail stewardship. As a chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA), we collaborate closely with the U.S. Forest Service, undertaking the significant task of maintaining hundreds of miles of multi-use trails within the iconic Pisgah Ranger District. Our efforts also extend to supporting various trail projects in collaboration with the cities of Brevard and Asheville, ensuring that the entire region's trail network remains a vibrant resource for all.
About Fat Tire
Fat Tire was born on a bike. And since its inception in 1991, it’s remained committed to giving back to the cycling community—both in the company’s backyard and across the globe. To date, the brand has donated more than $10 million dollars to bicycle nonprofits working to increase ridership through bicycle equity and access, safety education, and transportation justice. Pisgah Area SORBA ensures that nearly 200 miles of trails surrounding Fat Tire’s Asheville home are maintained. To show its appreciation, Fat Tire is matching Freehub’s total donations up to $10K. Cheers to that.
