Specialized “Vice” helmet isn’t your ordinary old XC helmet. With unique features such as more coverage extending to the rear and sides of the head, an in-molded shell that extends around the base of the helmet, an awesome ventilation design, full-circumference cradle, and burly bolted visor, the Vice provides protection encompassing a broad spectrum of mountain bike trail riding.
Though a bit heavier and larger than your average mountain biking helmet, the Vice rides surprisingly light for the amount of added dome-coverage. I must say that despite being a kick-ass trail helmet, I wouldn’t label it an “all-mountain” helmet in my book, as I still prefer my full-face to the Vice for DH rides, but some circles might beg to differ.
Some of my favorite features include, the Headset SL Fit System comprised of a dial adjustment that has small enough increments to get a super comfy fit for all head shapes with the simple, no-look, twist of a hand which is impressively un-impeded by the extra occipital protection features of this helmet. Another impressive feature is the ventilation design consisting of three deep internal channels and 30 large vents, all of which is made possible by an internal reinforcement cage that allows for extra strength despite less material — This feature was a dream when I crossed the continental divide 3 times in 24 hours while roasting in the sun on a recent bike trip. The ventilation pattern is also a reason why the Vice feels like a feather for the amount of coverage provided and thus riding options it facilitates. Finally, not to say that image really matters, especially when you’re rippin’ around in the woods amongst non-judgmental squirrels and cedars, but another feature I love about the “Vice” is its low-profile/flat looks and “non-blingy-ness” available in black, lime green, red, blue, camo black, silver, or white. The only feature that might bother some, but that I found absolutely no problem with, is the heavy-duty visor is non-adjustable.
Overall the Specialized “Vice” is a radical helmet that is both delightfully light and comfortable for the amount of protection you receive. This helmet is not only a product I would recommend to any friend but also one that I consider a “special” treat to own:]
